Research advances in etiology and risk factors associated with greater trochanteric pain syndrome

  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is a common cause of lateral hip pain, characterized by chronic intermittent hip or thigh pain that worsens after prolonged sitting, climbing stairs, strenuous activity or lying on the affected side, and the pain will relieve after rest. GTPS is a common orthopedic problem, but its etiology is not clear. This review aims to summarize the etiology, pathogenesis and risk factors, in order to provide evidences for its early diagnosis and treatment.
