Nutritional status of elderly bed-ridden patients with tube feeding

Objective:To evaluate the nutritional status and related to factors hypoalbuminemia in the elderly bed-ridden patients with tube feeding. Methods:78 male elderly bed-ridden patients with tube feeding over half years were studied. Anthropometric and loboratory variables and dietary intake were investigated. Results:The complications of lung infection were 89.5%, 76.7% and 10.3% in Marasmic-Kwashiorkor, hypoalbuminemia and Marasmus patients, respectively. Marasmic-Kwashiorkor and hypoalbuminemia have more protein requirements. By multivariate logistic regression analysis, odds ratios for hypoalbuminemia of complication of lung infection were 11.88.Conclusions:Older age and complication of lung infection are risk factors associated with hypoalbuminemia in elderly bed-ridden patients. But lung infection is major risk factor in these patients.
