Clinical significance of large unstained cells in upper respiratory infection

Objective: To discuss the normal reference value of LUC（large unstained cells） and its clinical application in the upper respiratory infection.Methods: the LUC data of 922 routine blood tests was collected from those practicing health examination from September 2003 to March 2004,and constituted the normative value.We analyze the LUC statistically of 2 113 inpatients or outpatients and 583 controls with routine blood tests from November 2004 to May 2005.Results: The normal reference value of LUC was less than 3.76%;And the value of children with upper respiratory infection was higher than that of normal ones,which had significant difference compared with the normal reference value（P＜0.01）.While the others had no significant differences（（P＞0.05））;Among the children′s group LUC% of those aging above 11 years old had no significant differences compared with the reference groups（P＞0.05）,but other classes in this group had significant differences（P＜0.01）.Also LUC% of those children older than 11 years old whose was higher than 4.5% had no significant differences compared with the reference groups（（P＞0.05））,whereas the other classes had significant differences（P＜0.01）.Conclusion: There is remarkable difference in LUC among different age class,and children’s LUC is distinctly higher than that of the adults.
