Effect of aspirin on C-reactive protein and diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients

  • Objective To study the effect of aspirin on serum high sensitive C-reactive protein(hs-CRP)in type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) patients and its relation with diabetic nephropathy. Methods One hundred and seven T2DM patients were randomly divide into group A(n=48) and group B(n=59).Patients in group A took 100mg aspirin per os/night and those in group B received routine anti-diabetic therapy for 12 months, then serum levels of hs-CRP,urinary albumin excretion rate(UAER),fast blood glucose(FBG),glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c),fasting insulin(INS),fasting C peptide, triglyceride(TG) and total cholesterol(TC) were measured. Results No significant difference was found in serum levels of FBG,HbA1c,INS,fasting C peptide,TG and TC between the two groups(P>0.05).The serum hs-CRP level was lower while the serum UAER level was higher in group A after treatment than before treatment(P<0.05).The serum hs-CRP and UAER levels were higher in group B after treatment than before treatment(P<0.01).The serum hs-CRP and UAER levels were higher in group B than in group A(P<0.01). Conclusion Aspirin can reduce the serum hs-CRP level in T2DM patients and plays a certain role in prevention and prediction of diabetic nephropathy.
