Application of fixed-bearing knee joint prosthesis in treatment of varus deformity in elderly osteoarthritis patients

  • Objective To observe the clinical effect of fixed-bearing knee joint prosthesis on varus deformity in elderly osteoarthritis patients. Methods Forty-three osteoarthritis patients (56 knees) at the age of 75.5 years (range 72-85 years) admitted to Benxi No.1 People's Hospital from March 2009 to August 2012 were included in this study. The patients underwent total knee joint replacement.Their clinical outcome was assessed according to the X-ray examination and HSS score. Results The patients were followed up for an average time of 27 months. The average HSS score of their increased from 51.9 before operation to 91.1 after operation. The average extension and flexion range of their knee increased from 5 degrees and 62.7 degrees before operation to 0 degree and 130 degrees after operation. The maximum and minimum varus deformity angle of their knee was 25 and 5 degrees before operation, which were corrected after operation. Conclusion Fixed- bearing knee joint prosthesis can achieve a satisfactory outcome in elderly osteoarthritis patients.
