Epidemiology of functional abdominal pain syndrome in navy officers and men

  • Objective To study the epidemiology of functional abdominal pain syndrome (FAPS) in navy off icers and men and its risk factors. Methods The epidemiology of FAPS in navy off icers and men was investigated by multistage, stratif ied, and random cluster sampling according to the Rome Ⅲcriteria. Results Of the 8600 questionnaires issued, 7574 were retuned. The total incidence of FAPS was 4.44% (336/7574) in navy off icers and men with a peak incidence in those aged 36-45 years. The incidence of FAPS was higher in those with a bachelor degree or above, in those living apart, divorced or with their wife or husband lost, and in administrators or military professionals.Sleeping time, working pressure, and history of trauma or hepato-biliary-pancreatic diseases were closely related with FAPS. Conclusion The incidence of FAPS is high in navy off icers and men and closely related with living style, working conditions, history of diseases, and should thus be concerned.
