Advances in mechanisms of negative pressure wound therapy

  • Negative-pressure wound therapy(NPWT) exerts a significant effect on different wounds.Studies on its mechanisms contribute to its correct application and further improvement.Following is a review of the update advances in its mechanisms.NPWT can reduce the wound surface area, stabilize the wound environment, alleviate wound edema, remove wound exudates, increase blood flow, and promote granulation tissue formation, which are the widely accepted mechanisms of NPWT.However,it is still controversial on its antimicrobial efficacy and bacterial clearance.
