Effect of sacral canal injection therapy on patients with lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion

  • Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect of sacral canal injection therapy on patients with lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion. Methods Two hundred patients with lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion were included and they were divided into two groups:patients undergoing lumber traction treatment group (n=100) and patients undergoing sacral canal injection therapy group (n=100). The scores of VAS and Straight-leg raising test of 3 d, 7 d, 14 d, 21 d after lumber traction treatment and sacral canal injection therapy were compared in each group. Results The effective rate of patients with sacral canal injection therapy (58/100) was higher than that of patients with lumber traction therapy (40/100) with significant difference (P< 0.05). The VAS score of patients with sacral canal injection therapy (7.11) was lower than that of patients with lumber traction therapy (7.28), after the treatment for 21 days, the VAS score were 1.13 and 2.01, respectively, which were significantly lower than before treatment (P< 0.01); The score of straight-leg raising test of patients with sacral canal injection therapy (70.83) was higher than that of patients with lumber traction therapy (64.43), which were significantly higher than before treatment (34.21 vs. 36.22, P< 0.01). The scores of straight-leg raising test of 3 d after sacral canal injection therapy and lumber traction therapy were 41.87 and 41.66, which was of no significant difference (P> 0.05). And the scores of straight-leg raising test of 7 d, 14 d and 21 d after sacral canal injection therapy and lumber traction therapy were 54.11, 60.32, 70.83 and 50.21, 58.78, 64.43, respectively, which was of significant difference (P< 0.05). Conclusion Sacral canal injection therapy has therapeutic effect on patients with lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion. The sacral canal injection therapy can decrease VAS score and improve the performance in straight-leg raising test.
