Advances in thermal ablation for treatment of uterine adenomyosis

  • Adenomyosis is a common benign disease affected women of reproductive age. Hysterectomy by laparotomy or laparoscopy is the radical treatment for adenomyosis in women without fertility requirements. In recent years, the reported incidence of adenomyosis is increasing in nulliparous women. More and more young patients want to preserve the integrity and fertility of the uterus because of many factors, such as quality of life and fertility requirement. Therefore, uterus-sparing minimally invasive treatment for adenomyosis developed rapidly, especially in thermal ablation represented by high intensity focused ultrasound therapy. This article reviews the recent development of thermal ablation for treatment of uterine adenomyosis.
