In vitro assessment of curved convey device in vertebroplasty

Abstract
Objective To observe the effect of a curved convey device applied in vertebroplasty of osteoporosis in vitro. Methods Twenty four osteoporotic vertebral bodies (T10-L2) selected from 6 aged female cadavers were experimentally crunched as models and randomly divided into three groups. Group A and group B were injected with bone cement by straight puncture cannula, while th injection of group C was conveyed by curved device. Under the supervision of X-ray machine, each group separately underwent the surgery of vertebroplasty by strengthening through unilateral arch or bilateral arch with the help of self-made convey device The amount of bone cement was recorded in each group, and whether bone cement stepped over vertebral sagittal midline or no was observed. Results There was significant difference in the volume of bone cement between group A and group B, C (3.12±0.18 ml vs (5.82±0.20) ml, (6.16±0.24) ml, P< 0.05. While, there was no significant difference in the number of vertebral bodies o bone cement stepping over the vertebral sagittal midline between group A, B, C (Fisher's test, P> 0.05). No cement leakage wa found in three groups. Conclusion Curved convey device can create a crossing vertebral bony sagittal midline channel by puncturing through single-side pedicle, and guide bone cement transfer to the opposite side, which helps strengthen the whole vertebral through unilateral pedicle.
