Clinical significance and expression of vasohibin-1 in gastric cancer

  • Objective To evaluate the expression of vasohibin-1 in gastric cancer tissue specimens and corresponding cancer adjacent tissues, analyze its clinical significance and its relationship with clinical pathological features in gastric cancer patients. Methods One hundred and thirty-eight primary gastric cancer tissue specimens and corresponding cancer adjacent tissues (away from the tumor more than 5 cm) were collected from patients with gastric cancer who had undergone total or subtotal resection with complete clinical pathological data and follow-up data in department of general surgery, the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinzhou Medical University from January 2009 to March 2012. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of vasohibin-1, follow-up data were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Results The positive rate of vasohibin-1 in gastric cancer was 71.73% (99/138), and it was 31.16% (43/138) in corresponding cancer adjacent tissues with statistically significant difference (χ2=30.986, P< 0.001); The expression of vasohibin-1 in gastric cancer tissue was associated with differentiated degree and lymph node metastasis (P=0.001, P=0.005), but it was not related with patients' age, gender, tumor size, the depth of invasion and TNM staging. Log-rank test showed that the postoperative 5 years survival rate of patients with positive vasohibin-1 expression was 10%, which was significantly lower than patients with negative expression (χ2=25.185, P< 0.001). Conclusion The results suggest that vasohibin-1 expressed highly in gastric cancer.
