Sleep quality of elderly patients with COPD and its related influencing factors

  • Objective To investigate the sleep quality of elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)and its related influencing factors, and provide support for the improvement of quality of care. Methods Eighty-nine elderly patients with stable COPD in the first and second medical center of Chinese PL A General Hospital from December 2016 to December 2018 participated in a survey including lung function,Pittsburgh sleep quality index scale(PSQI),modified British medical research council respiratory questionnaire(mMRC),and COPD self-assessment test(CAT). Results The PSQI score of the elderly stable COPD patients was 5.73 ±2.96,and the sleep quality was poor in 42.6% patients(PSQI>5).Sleep quality in elderly patients with COPD was significantly correlated with CAT(OR=1.124,P=0.007)and mMRC(OR=0.663,P=0.039). Conclusion The sleep quality of elderly stable COPD patients is poor.Respiratory symptoms and severity of respiratory distress are the main factors affecting sleep quality.
