Sleep quality of elderly patients with COPD and its related influencing factors

Objective To investigate the sleep quality of elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)and its related influencing factors,and provide support for the improvement of quality of care. Methods Eighty-nine elderly patients with stable COPD in the first and second medical center of Chinese PL A General Hospital from December 2016 to December 2018 participated in a survey including lung function,Pittsburgh sleep quality index scale(PSQI),modified British medical research council respiratory questionnaire(mMRC),and COPD self-assessment test(CAT). Results The PSQI score of the elderly stable COPD patients was 5.73 ±2.96,and the sleep quality was poor in 42.6% patients(PSQI>5).Sleep quality in elderly patients with COPD was significantly correlated with CAT(OR=1.124,P=0.007)and mMRC(OR=0.663,P=0.039). Conclusion The sleep quality of elderly stable COPD patients is poor.Respiratory symptoms and severity of respiratory distress are the main factors affecting sleep quality.
