Research advances in orthodontic treatment of children with pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

  • Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a ventilatory disorder caused by repeated upper airway obstruction during sleep, which seriously affects children’s mental and physical development and other physical and mental health. The etiology and mechanism of pediatric OSAS is complex, and there are many treatment methods, emphasized cross-disciplinary awareness and multiple disciplines involvement. With the further integration and development of stomatology in the field of pediatric sleep medicine, orthodontic appliances and muscle function therapy have been widely used in pediatric OSAS because of their advantages in craniofacial bone management, providing more treatment options for OSAS children with maxillofacial abnormalities. This article reviews the etiological mechanism, multi-disciplinary research status and oral treatment of pediatric OSAS.
