Prevalence of sleep disorder in community dwelling elderly people over 80 years: A Meta-analysis

  •   Background  Previous studies on sleep disorders in the elderly (≥ 80 years old) have received extensive attention, however, there is no systematic study and analysis on the prevalence of sleep disorders in the elderly due to the limitation of sample size, funding and regional differences.
Objective  To estimate the sleep disorder prevalence of the elderly (≥ 80 years old) by meta-analysis.
Methods  The Chinese and English databases (Pubmed, Wiley, EMBase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, websites of ministries of health/ministries of public health/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of various governments, and websites of the National Health Commission of China) were systematically retrieved. The relevant literatures on the prevalence of sleep disorders in the elderly were searched from January 1, 2000 to May 31, 2022. The combined values were calculated by random effect fitting according to heterogeneity.
Results  A total of 25 articles (7 Chinese articles and 18 English articles) were included in the meta-analysis, including 52 617 elderly people over 80 years. Meta analysis showed that the sleep disorder prevalence rate of the elderly was 28.8% (95% CI: 23.4%-34.9%).Subgroup analysis showed the female had higher sleep disorder prevalence rate than the male (32.2%95% CI: 26.6%-38.5% vs 29.8%95% CI: 23.3%-37.3%), and the domestic studies had higher prevalence rate compared to the foreign studies (33.5%95% CI: 25.9%-41.6% vs 22.8%95% CI: 17.0%-29.9%).
Conclusion  The prevalence of sleep disorders among the elderly should be further concerned and explored in the prevalence and distribution of sleep disorders among the elderly and even the centenarians, as well as their association with longevity and health outcomes.
