Therapeutic effect of colpocleisis on urinary symptoms in patients with pelvic organ prolapse

Abstract
Objective To study the therapeutic effect of colpocleisis on urinary symtpoms in patients with pelvic organ prolapse(POP)Methods From October 2005 to February 2010,60 patients with stagesⅢandⅣPOP diagnosed with POP-Q system underwent total and partial colpocleisis.Outcomes of the patients were compared using the urinary distress inventory(UDI-6),pelvic organ prolapse distress inventory(POPDI-6) and urinary impact questionnaire(UIQ-7),and pelvic organ prolapse impact questionnaire(POPIQ-7) 2 months,6 months and 1 year respectively before and after operationResults The patients were followed up for 2 months,6 months and 1 year respectively after operation,with a follow-up rate of 93%(56/60),88%(53/60) and 87%(52/60) respectively.The obstructive urinary symtpoms disappeared completely 2 months after operation.The other symptoms such as frequency and urgency of urination as well as stress incontinence improved significantly 2 months after operation and maintained for 1 year.The mean score for urinary symtpoms and quality of life of the patients was significantly higher after operation than before operation(P=0.000 0)Conclusion Colpocleisis can effectively improve the urinary symtpoms and quality of life of patients with POP.
