Correlation between polysomy of chromosomes 1 and 19 in glioma and its clinicopathological and radiological factors

  • Objective To study the clinicopathological and radiological factors for polysomy of chromosomes 1 and 19 in patients with glioma. Methods Deletion of chromosomes 1p and 19q and their polysomy were detected in 254 patients with glioma by fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH).Polysomy of chromosome was defined as more than two 1q and 19p signals in >30% glioma cells.Other factors,including age and gender of patients with glioma,and pathology,grade and location of glioma,were obtained through a retrospective analysis of medical records and radiological imaging data.Factors for polysomy of chromosomes 1 and 19 were identified through univariate and multivariate analysis. Results Among the 254 patients with glioma,polysomy of chromosomes 1 and 19 was detected in 68(26.8%) with a significant correlation(P<0.000 001).Univariate and multivariate analysis showed that the polysomy of chromosomes 1 and 19 was significantly related with the younger age of glioma patients and deletion of chromosomes 1p and19q but not with their age and gender,glioma pathology,grade and location. Conclusion Polysomy of chromosomes 1 and 19 existing in glioma cannot be used to predict glioma pathology and grade.Younger age of glioma patients and deletion of chromosomes 1 and 19 are the independent factors for the polysomy of chromosomes 1 and 19,indicating that polysomy of chromosomes can be used as a predictor for the favorable prognosis of glioma.
