Animal expeniment with aminophylline in reversing narcotic-induced respiratory depression

This paper reports our preliminary result of narcotic-induced respiratory depression reversed by the use of aminophylline in rabbits.For inducing respiratory depression,different dosage of morphine was used.As antagonist,aminophylline was then administered after 30 minutes.Antagonism with 5 mg/kg aminophylline showed some individual variation;while 10mg,15mg/kg could effectively abate morphine-induced respiratory depression with increasing vantilation and rate of breath.In dose of aminophylline up to 20 mg/kg,there was no further improvement but causing, apparently,side-effect on cardiovascular system,The effect of aminophylline as a narcotic-induced respiratory depression antagonist has certain limitation:It doesn’t depend on the dosage of morphine used but on the depth of respiratory depression.Aminophyline has definite apnea-preventing effect when used simultaneously with morphine.
