First case of unrelated donor allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in the treatment of severe aplastic anemia in China

  • Objective: To investigate efficacy of unrelated donor allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation(UD-PBSCT) in treatment of severe aplastic anemia(SAA).Methods: A 21-year-old Chinese woman had been suffering from SAA for 6 years. We did not find any HLAmatched related donor for the patient. The patient was treated with PBSCT from a HLA-A-1-allele-mismatched unrelated donor with cyclophosphamide, etoposide and antithymocyte globulin for conditioning.Mycophenolate mofetil, cyclosporin A,CD25 antibody and short-term methotraxate were administered as graft versus host disease(GVHD) prophylaxis. Results: The absolute neutrophil count of 0.998 ×109/L was achieved at 22nd day,the platelet count ≥20 ×109/L at 33rdday,the platelet counted to 52×109/L at 50thday,the hemoglobin counted to 104g/L at 61st day.Disease-free survival without GVHD was 8 months. Conclusion: UD-PBSCT may be considered as a choice when hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is needed for SAA patients.
