PRELIMENARY REPORT OF RESIN (T10) HEMOPERFUSION IN RATS WITH ACUTE LIVER DAMAGE INDUCED BY D-GALACTOSAMINE (D-GALN)

  • Eighty-five rats were devided into 4 groups as follows: (1) 35 rats with liver damage+T10 (strong basic negative-iron-exchange resin) hemoperfusion (HP), (2) 27 rats with liver damage+charcoal HP. (3) 17 rats with liver damage+glass beads HP. (4) 6 healthy rats+T10 HP. The results of the first three groups revealed: (1) Rats tolerated HP well during the period of 36-40 hours after intraperitoneal injection of D-Galn. even though their livers had been severely damaged. (2) The severity of hep-atic encephalopathy could not be graded in rats as in human. (3) Histological examina-tion of their livers after HP did not show any significant differences between these three groups (P>0.05). In the first group. the total serum billirubin of rats was decreased by 57.9% after T10 HP, while the white blood cells were decreased by 6.7% and the platelets were decreased by 28%. The results of this study suggest that T10 is an effective resin for reducing serum bilirubin in hyperbilirubinemia, but it is not able to affect the pathological changes of the liver. nor the survival rate of the experimental animals. No other side effect has been found.
