Application of grip strength in nutrition assessment of patients with gastrointestinal cancer

Objective To study the application of grip strength in nutrition assessment of patients with gastrointestinal cancer.Methods One hundred and eighty-eight patients with gastrointestinal cancer were enrolled in this study.Grip strength of their both hands was measured.Correlation between grip strength and anthropometry,laboratory findings,resting energy expenditure（REE） and NRS2002 score was analyzed.Results The grip strength of patients with gastrointestinal cancer was highly correlated with the anthropometric variables,ALB,PA and REE（P＜0.05）.The grip strength of patients with a NRS2002 score ≥3 was much lower than that of those with a NRS2002 score ＜3（P＜0.05）.Conclusion Grip strength can be used as a simple,rapid and non-invasive indicator for nutrition assessment of patients with gastrointestinal cancer.
