Endovascular treatment of congenial arteriovenous fistula

  • Objective To study the efficacy and safety of endovascular treatment of congenial arteriovenous fistula and its problems. Methods Clinical data about 30 congenial arteriovenous fistula patients admitted to our hospital in March 2006-October 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients underwent angiography and endovascular surgical treatment after certain examinations and were followed up every three months after operation. Results The symptoms of 25 patients were improved after endovascular surgical treatment with no complications and peri-operative death occurred.Five patients were not treated due to their failure in cooperation or a high risk or too thin vessels. The patients were followed up for an average period of six months during which symptoms recurred in 5 patients. However, they were less severe than before treatment. Conclusion Endovascular treatment is an effective, safe and micro-invasive procedure for congenial arteriovenous fistula with a satisfactory short term outcome.
