Genetic polymorphisms of GSTM1 gene related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Objective：The genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase （GSTM1） gene were analyzed probed for the genetic marker of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.Methods：The case-control study was conducted among 78 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cases and 71hospitalized controls.The genetic polymorphisms were tested with method of Multiplex-PCR.We investigated susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in relation to GSTM1（—） genotype combination with cigarette smoking dose.Results： The frequencies of GSTM1（—） were 58.97% and 53.52% respectively in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease group and control group （P＞0.05）.Individuals with GSTM1（—） genotype combination with cigarette smoking dose （ ＞20pack-years） were at remarkably high-risk susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with an odds ratio of 5.36（95%CI 2.15～13.21）.Conclusion： Genetic polymorphisms in GSTM1 combination with cigarette smoking dose were associated with the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in China.
