Genetic polymorphisms of GSTM1 gene related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

  • Objective:The genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase (GSTM1) gene were analyzed probed for the genetic marker of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods:The case-control study was conducted among 78 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cases and 71hospitalized controls. The genetic polymorphisms were tested with method of Multiplex-PCR.We investigated susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in relation to GSTM1(—) genotype combination with cigarette smoking dose. Results: The frequencies of GSTM1(—) were 58.97% and 53.52% respectively in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease group and control group (P>0.05).Individuals with GSTM1(—) genotype combination with cigarette smoking dose ( >20pack-years) were at remarkably high-risk susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with an odds ratio of 5.36(95%CI 2.15~13.21).Conclusion: Genetic polymorphisms in GSTM1 combination with cigarette smoking dose were associated with the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in China.
