Bone density of rabbit femoral cancellous bone defect after calcium sulphate implantation

  • Objective To investigate the effect of calcium sulphate on cancellous bone defect. Methods A distal rabbit femoral cancellous defect model was established by filling the defect with citrated calcium sulphate(CCaS)and Osteoset tablets.The bone density was then observed,examined by plain X-Ray,and analyzed. Results CCaS and Osteoset implanted in the defects were gradually absorbed and replaced by new bones.After 3 weeks,the bone density was higher in the repair region than in normal femur condyle.After 6 weeks,the bone density was lower in the defect area than in normal femur condyle.The bone density was higher after 13 weeks than after 6 weeks.The bone density of the two groups at different time points had no statistical difference,but was remarkably higher than that of the blank group. Conclusion Calcium sulphate is gradually absorbed and does not interfere with new bone formation,thus promoting formation of new bones.
