Value of peripheral blood C-reactive protein and IL-6 levels for diagnosis of sepsis in children

  • Objective To study the value of peripheral blood C-reactive protein(CRP) and IL6 levels for the diagnosis of sepsis in children. Methods Ninety children with sepsis served as a sepsis group,36 as a non-systematic infection group,13 as a severe sepsis group, and 20 healthy individuals as a control group.Peripheral blood CRP and IL–6 levels in 90 children with sepsis were measured and their statistical significance was analyzed. Results The CRP and IL-6 levels were higher in sepsis group than in control group(P<0.001).ROC analysis showed that the AUC of CRP and IL–6 was 0.87 with a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 81% and 77%,respectively. Conclusion Peripheral blood CRP and IL6 levels have a certain value for the early diagnosis of sepsis in children and can be used in routine diagnosis of sepsis.
