Abstract
Objective To study the rabbit intermediate-late avascular necrosis femoral head(ANFH) model induced by thermal injury in combination with liquid nitrogen freezing. Methods Twenty 5-month old Japanese big-ear rabbits were included in this study.A intermediate-late ANFH model was induced by thermal injury in combination with liquid nitrogen freezing without dislocation of hip joint to observe their gross anatomy 1,2,4,6 and 8 weeks after operation.Tissue sections were observed under optical microscopy and examined by X-ray and MRI. Results Necrosis of femoral head occurred 1 week after operation and was repaired 2 weeks after operation.Joint surface of femoral head was collapsed 4 weeks after operation, which was aggravated 6 weeks after operation and became flat and smaller with osteoarthritis at week 8 after operation. Conclusion Thermal injury in combination with liquid nitrogen freezing can be used to establish rabbit intermediate-late ANFH model with no death of rabbits and a high success rate.
