Evaluation of curative effect of improved treatment measures on burn patients

  • Objective: To evaluate the curative effect of improved treatment measures on burn patients through analyses of patients admitted to our burn center in the past 6 years. Methods: 2721 patients hospitalized to the center from May, 1997 to February, 2003 were involved in this retrospective study, 248 of which sustained burns ≥30% of total body surface area (TBSA), 2473 of which had burns <30% of TBSA. Average hospitalization days, cure rate, 50% lethal area (LA50), Ⅲ°LA50. Improved treatment measures were concentrate on complication prevention: small molecular heparin to prevent micro-thrombus, low volume ventilation and high PEEP to treat ARDS, Thymosin-α1 to modulate immune dysfunction, heparin-free hemodialysis to treat hypernatremia, and short-term combined utilization of large dose glucocorticoid and anisodamine to control septic shock. Results: The average hospitalization days were 25, and the cure rate was 99.71%, and LA50 and Ⅲ° LA50 were 98.97% and 89.32% respectively, which were much better than before. Conclusion: Innovation of treatment measures improved the outcome of burn patients.
