Effects of Shengu capsule on calcium and phosphorus metabolism in the hemodialysis patients

  • To observe the therapeutic effects of Shengu capsule on the hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism in hemodialysis patients. 14 chronic renal failure patients on hemodialysis were treated with Shengu capsule and placebo in a cross-over test, and 5 patients taking Shengu capsule were followed for 5 to 8 weeks. In 3 weeks, Shengu capsule (2.04±0.09 g calcium/day)corrected hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia, as well as inhibited secondary hyperparathyroidism more effectively than placebo. In the 5-8 week follow up period, Shengu capsule in a lower dosage of (1.65±0.28)g calcium/day can still effectively correct hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia, and serum intact parathyroid hormone concentration decreased progressively. Shengu capsule is effective to correct the calcium and phosphorus metabolism disorder in hemodialysis patients.
