Treatment of traumatic brain injury in rats with neural stem cells and olfactory ensheathing cells transplantation

  • Objective To study the effect of neural stem cells and olfactory ensheathing cells transplantation on traumatic brain injury in rats. Methods One hundred and twenty-five adult SD rats were randomly divided into control group(group A),neural stem cells transplantation group(group B),olfactory ensheathing cells transplantation group(group C),neural stem cells and olfactory ensheathing cells transplantation group(group D),sham operation group(group E),25 rats in each group.Bone window was opened to expose the dura matter.Traumatic brain injury was induced using the Feeney′s method of free-fall impact in the other 4 groups except for sham operation group.Neurological function was scored 1,14 and 30 days, respectively, after injury was induced.Samples were taken and stained with HE and immunohistochemistry. Results The therapeutic effect was better in groups B and D than in groups A and C 14,25 and 30 days after operation(P<0.05).The neurological function score was higher in groups B,C and D than in group A 1,25 and 30 days after operation(P<0.05). Conclusion Neural stem cells and olfactory ensheathing cells transplantation can treat traumatic brain injury in rats.
