Feasibility of using mobile phone short messages to provide pharmaceutical care for diabetics

Abstract
Objective To investigate the feasibility of using mobile phone to provide pharmaceutical care for diabetics in order to offer a new idea on pharmacy care to clinical pharmacists. Methods One week after mobile phone short message was used to provide personal pharmaceutical care of diabetics, including administration and adverse reaction of hypoglycemic drugs, monitoring methods of blood glucose, remedy for hypoglycemia, control of diet and exercise, hazards of diabetes, integrated treatment and regular examination of diabetes, its feasibility to provide pharmaceutical care for diabetics was evaluated with questionnaire. Results One hundred and fifty-five out of the 175 diabetics enrolled in this study completed the questionnaire. The mean score of pharmaceutical care provided by mobile phone short message was 96.7±5.6. Conclusion The recognition and feasibility of using mobile phone short massage to provide pharmaceutical care for diabetics are rather high, and mobile phone short massage can thus be used by clinical pharmacists to offer their pharmaceutical care for diabetics.
