Abstract
A seroepidemiological survey, both prospective and retrospective, for toxoplasmosis was carried out among 422 pregnant women and 116 of their offsprings in Beiging urban and suburban areas. Indirect immunofluorescent antibody test was used to titrate specific IgG and IgM. The prevalence of serum antibodies was 29.15% in the gravidae, with a significantly higher positive rate in the suburban women than urban women. 2 women had seroconversion during pregnancy, thus giving a conversion rate of 0.67%, but neither of them nor their babies showed any sign of the illness. Specific anti-toxoplasma IgM antibody had not been found in all the umbilical blood samples from the newborns. No evidence that toxoplasmosis was a definite pathogenic relationship to previous and present fetal wastages among the women studied in our series has been observed.
