Treatment of pulmonary carcinomas in the aged-a report of 100 cases

  • The treatment of 100 cases of pulmonary carcinomas in patients aged 60 to 81 years is reported. These cancer were proved by either histopathologic or cytopathologic examinations. The results of this study concluded as:(1)The prognosis of this condition in these aged people in chiefly depends upon the cell type, the stage,as well as the method of treatment. The survival time of patients with small cell carcinoma who have been treated favorablly may approachs that in patients with adenocarcinoma.(2)The resection rate of squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas is only fourteen out of twenty two(63.6%)even at stage Ⅰ or Ⅱ.This may be due to either the poor general condition of the patients or other the presence of advanced illness coexistent with pulmonary carcinoma, which render the surgical approach too poor a risk.(3)The rate of multiple primary tumors among these patients is 10 percent. Some concrete suggestions about early diagnosis and prolongation of survival time are finally made in the paper.
