Intraoperative colonic lavage and primary resection and anastomosis constitute the ope ration of choice for left obstructive colon cancer

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to introduce a modified procedure for primary resection and anastomosis and evaluate its result and rationales. Methods: Betwwen 1988 to 1998, 38 patients underwent emergency operation for the obstruction of left colon cancer. Intraoperative colonic lavage and primary resection and anastomosis were performed in 28 patients. Results: postoperative mortality rate was zero per cent. The incidence of clinical anastomotic leakage was 3.6 per cent wound infection rat was 7.1%. The overall mean hospital stay was 14 days.Conclusion: Intraoperative colonic lavage and primary resection and anastomosis constitute the operation of choice for left obstructive colon cancer.
