Experimental study of occlusal splint on temporomandibular joint

Objective: To study the effects of occlusal splint on TMJ. Methods: 8 Chinese childhood experimental minipigs were used and divided into 2 groups: wearing occlusal splint group and control group. LM, SEM and CT scan were employed to examine the TMJ. Results: The occlusal splint caused bilateral mandibular condyle to move downward and forward; there were no significant differences of cartilages and bones between experimental pigs and the control ones. Conclusion: The occlusal splint had no unfavorable effect on mandibular condyle, the remodeling is within the physiological range.
