Clinical periodontal indexes and suspicious periodontal pathogens in officers and men of nuclear submarine before and after a long voyage

  • Objective To study the change of clinical periodontal indexes and suspicious pathogens in officers and men of nuclear submarine before and after a long voyage. Methods Seventy-eight officers and men of nuclear submarine were enrolled in this study.Dental plaque index(PI),gingival index(GI),probing depth(PD) and bleeding on probing(BOP) were detected in 16 and 41 teeth.Subgingival plaque samples were collected from the buccal gingival groove of the right mandibular incisor and the right maxillary first molar.Seven suspicious periodontal pathogens were detected by PCR and their detection rates were compared. Results The PI,GI and BOP officers and men of nuclear submarine were higher after a long voyage than before it but no significant difference was observed in them(P>0.05).The PD was significantly higher after a long voyage than before it(P<0.05).The detection rate of P.gingivalis,Tforsythia,Pintermedia, and Tdenticola was higher after a long voyage than before it(P<0.05). Conclusion The number of suspicious pathogens increases in subgingival plaques of officers and men of nuclear submarine after a long voyage.
