Comprehensive treatment of metastatic spinal cancer accompanying compression fracture

  • Objective To study the comprehensive treatment of metastatic spinal cancer accompanying compression fracture. Methods Seventy-three patients with metastatic spinal cancer accompanying compression fracture admitted to our hospital were divided into group A(n=40) and group B(n=33).Patients in group A received comprehensive therapy plus operation,and those in group B underwent comprehensive therapy without operation. Results The patients were followed up for 6 months.Of the 40 patients in group A,35 could take care of themselves with a KPS over 70,4 died of cancer metastasis and spreading during the follow-up period.Of the 33 patients in group B,20 had a satisfactory outcome with a KPS over 70,11 could not take care of themselves with a KPS≤60,and 2 became paraplegic before they died during the follow-up period. Conclusion The quality of life of patients with metastatic spinal cancer accompanying compression fracture can be improved after comprehensive treatment plus operation at an appropriate time.
