Development of the three-dimensional finite element model of adult dog temporo-mandibular joint in functional loading

  • Three-dimensional finite element models of the mandibles in normal adult dog and adult dogs with various operations were generated in centric occlusion during maximum muscle forcesby spiral computed tomographic (SCT) three-dimensional image reconstruction technique and three-dimensional finite element analysis method. The result shows: Good mandibular model geometry similarity and shape restitution were demonstrated between SCT three-dimensional reconstruction image and three-dimensional finite element model. Accurate and rational mesh refinement was obtained in the model. Loading pattern correspond to physiological condition with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) forces in functional loading was reflected and simulated more realistically. The modeling method was feasible and effective. It was possible to analyse the biomechanical behavior of adult dog TMJ in various functional cases by the model.
