Therapeutic effect of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in combination with nasal surgery on obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome

  • Objective To study the therapeutic effect of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty(UPPP)in combination with nasal surgery on obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS)complicated by nasal and oropharyngeal obstruction. Methods OSAHS was diagnosed and evaluated according to the body mass index(BMI)and subjective symptoms of patients, and the findings at polysomnography(PSG).Physical examination showed oropharyngeal stricture and nasal abnormality. The patients underwent UPPP in combination with partial inferior turbinectomy and/or submucous resection of nasal septum, and followed up for 1-2 years after operation. Results Reexamination of the patients 1 year after operation showed that the clinical manifestations of patients, such as snoring, suffocating, headache and drowsiness, were significantly improved. Conclusion UPPP in combination with partial inferior turbinectomy and/or submucous resection of nasal septum can achieve rather good therapeutic effects on OSAHS
