Quality parameters of platelets at different preservation time points after Gamma irradiation

  • Objective To analyze the changes of CD62P,mean platelet volume(MPV),and platelet distribution width(PDW) at different preservation time points after gamma irradiation. Methods Twenty bags of concentrated platelets and 20 bags of apheresis platelets were randomly selected. The platelets in each bag were divided into two parts. One part was irradiated with 137 cesium at 25Gy and the other part was not irradiated. The two parts were preserved at 22℃±2℃ for 72h.The concentrated platelets and apheresis platelets were considered as irradiation groups 1 and 2,the platelets not irradiated were considered as control groups 1 and 2.Expression of CD62P in platelets was detected by flow cytometry before and 24 and 72h after irradiation, respectively.MPV and PDW were calculated with a blood counter. Results The expression rate of CD62P in platelets increased with the preservation time of platelets in both irradiation and control groups with a significant difference 72h after preservation between the two groups(P<0.05).The MPV and PDW also increased with the preservation time of platelets in both irradiation and control groups with no significant difference between the two groups(P>0.05). Conclusion Platelets should be used within 72h after irradiation although Gamma irradiation has no significant effect on them.
