The expression of p53, bcl-2,MDR1,GST Pi protein in ovarian epithelial cancer

  • Objective: To study the relationship between MDR1, GST-Pi, p53 and bcl-2 with the clinical pathological characteristics of oavaian epithelial cancer and evaluate their role in the origin, progression, therapy and prognosis of ovarian epithelial cancer. Methods: The expression of MDR1, GST-Pi, p53, bcl-2 protein were detected by immunohistochemical staining in 52 cases of ovarian cancer, 9 cases of borderline malignancy, 21 cases of benign tumor and 7 cases of normal ovarian tissue. Results: 1. In normal ovary, benign tumor, borderline malignancy and ovarian cancer, the positive of MDR1 protein (P-glycoprotein) was 0, 0, 3/9, 22/52; the positive of GST-Pi protein was 0, 1/21, 5/9, 43/52; the positive expression of p53 protein was 0, 0, 1/9, 34/52; and the positive of bcl-2 protein was 1/7, 2/21, 5/9, 31/52 respectively. 2. The expressions of MDR1 and GST-Pi protein were closely related to non despondence to chemotherapy. 3. The expression of p53 protein revealed significant relationship to the clinical stage and the histological differentiation; and bcl-2 protein was closely related to histological type. 4. Significant relationship was found between p53 and bcl-2, p53 and MDR1, bcl-2 and GST-Pi. Conclusion: Overexpression of MDR1, GST-Pi, p53, bcl-2 in ovarian epithelial cancer is very common. Four genes involve in the origin and development by different means and have different relationship with ovarian cancer .Determination of the expression of MDR1 and GST-Pi is useful for predicting the sensitivity to chemotherapy. The relationship between apoptosis and drug resistance gene is worth to be further studied.
