Effects of TWP on surface cellular response of IOL

  • Objective:To observe the pathological changes of the posterior chamber lens, and the effects of Tryptergium Wilfordii Polyglycosidium (TWP) on inflammatory cells of IOL after cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in rabbits.Methods:Twenty-seven adult pigmented rabbits were equally divided into three groups: (1)The IOL were placed into the capsular bag after lens extraction, (2)Rabbits received TWP therapy after IOL implantation, and (3)Rabbits received prednisone therapy after IOL implantation. IOLs were extracted on days 1、7 and 14 after IOL implantation, and the pathological changes of IOLs were observed with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the number of inflammatory cells of IOLs wre also counted. The data were analyzed by SAS variance analysis software. Results:It was found that the revarious forms of inflammatory cells on the IOL surface after cataract extraction. The numberof the inflammatory cells on the IOL surface was significantly lower in TWP-treated group than that of the steroid-treated group. Conclusion:The current study offers that TWP is effective in reducing postoperative inflammatory response of on IOL, and it is more effective than steroid.
