Epidemiologic study on metabolic syndrome diagnosed by the definition of CDS in the elderly in some high-grade communities in Beijing

  • Objective: To study the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and the epidemiological characteristics in the elderly in some high-grade communities in Beijing. Methods: A survey was conducted among 683 elderly subjects while physical examination was undergoing in PLA General Hospital from May 1996 to May 1997.The risk factors of metabolic syndrome were analyzed with multiple logistic regression. Results: (1)41.43% subjects with hyperglycemia,54.03% with hypertension,25.04% with dyslipidemia, and 50.51% with obesity(BMI≥25kg/m2).(2)The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 24.60%.((3)Multiple) logistic regression analysis showed that the risk factors of metabolic syndrome were BMI,diabetes, hypertension, high level of triglyeride, hyperglycemia of 2 hour post glucose challenge, and high systolic blood pressure. Conclusions: (1)Elder men were the high-risk groups of metabolic syndrome.(2)Obesity,diabetes,hypertension,high level of triglyeride, hyperglycemia of 2 hour post glucose challenge, and high systolic blood pressure were the main risk factors of metabolic syndrome.
