Effect of supplementation with micronutrients on incidence of common infections in type 2 diabetic patients with different fasting blood glucose levels

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of supplementation with micronutrients on incidence of common infections in type 2 diabetic patients with different fasting blood glucose levels. Methods: A randomized double blind and placebo-control trial was carried out,in which 196 type 2 diabetic patients were enrolled and randomized to receive tablets of micronutrients or placebo for 6 months.Individualized energy intake and physical activity daily were advised for each patient based on his or her basic information.Anthropometric index,blood biochemical variable.CD4+ and CD8+ were measured at the initial and final time points of the study.Diet,exercise and infection were recorded once a week and interview was done one month before and every month during the study. Results: Fourteen patients were excluded from the study.There were 92 patients in placebo group(27 with their blood glucose≤6.1mmol/L,63 with their blood glucose≤6.1mmol/L) and 90 patients in supplementation group(30 with their blood glucose≤6.1mmol/L,and 62 with their blood glucose>6.1mmol/L).There was no significant difference in all the parameters between the two groups at the initial time point of the study.The duration of fever was much shorter in supplementation group than in placebo group with its blood fasting glucose≤6.1mmol/L.The incidence of common fever and dermapostasis was much lower in supplementation group than in placebo group with its fasting glucose >6.1mmol/L.In addition,the temperature was much lower and the duration of fever was much shorter in supplementation group than in placebo group with its blood fasting glucose>6.1mmol/L. Conclusion: Supplementation with micronutrients daily for six months can increase the amount of CD4+,reduce the amount of CD8+ and the incidence of common infections in type 2 diabetic patients with different blood fasting glucose levels.
