Completion pneumonectomy for pulmonary diseases

Abstract
Objective To study the features of completion pneumonectomy for pulmonary diseases and the prognosis and complications in such patients after the operation. Methods Clinical data about 16 patients with pulmonary diseases after completion pneumonectomy were retrospectively analyzed. Results The rate of radical resection,complications and mortality after operation was 87.5%(14/16),18.8%(3/16)and 0%,respectively.The mean intra-operative blood loss was 1 700ml.The intra-pericardial dissection accounted for 62.5%(10/16).The 1-,3-and 5-year survival rate of patients with lung cancer was 81.8%(9/11),30%(3/10) and 22.2%(2/9),respectively. Conclusion Completion pneumonectomy is a safe and effective procedure for pulmonary disease and should be widely applied in thoracic surgery.
