Variations in pituitary hormone values in association with ovarian dysfunction—An analysis of 61 cases

  • Assays of the serum LH,FSH and PRL were carried out in 61 patients with ovarian dys- genesis and 27 cases (44.26%) were diagnosed etiologically on basis of the assays.In cases of congenital ovarian dysgenesis and premature ovarian failure (POF) as well,the serum LH and FSH values were found to be at the upper limit of or above normal the peaks of adult woman belonging tocondition known as hypergonadotropism.In the latter they were even higher than in the former.However,the LH/FSH ratio was<1 and the PRL value was practically the same in both groups. Patients with amenorrhea,due to weight loss,hypothalamic dysfunction or pituitary adenoma, had their serum LH and FSH values quite similar to those of early follicular phase of normal adult cycles,a condition known as hypogonadotropism.On the other hand,amenorrhea due to weight loss was characterized by higher LH/FSH ratio while that due to pituitary adenoma(postop- erative cases also) by high PRL value. The LH value in polycystic ovarian disease was higher than that of hypogonadotropism,but no difference was detected in comparing with FSH,yeilding a much higher LH/FSH ratio than that in other disease groups. There seemed to be no obvious correlation between PRL value and that of gonadotropins.
