Preserved human amniotic membrane transplantation for ocular surface diseases

  • Objective: To evaluate the clinic application of preserved human amniotic membrane transplantation in severe ocular surface disease. Methods: 54patients (56eyes) with ocular surface disease were chosen.Operations of preserved human amniotic membrane transplantation for ocular surface reconstruction were performed on the basis of routine operations. Results: All ocular surfaces of these patients were reconstructed with little inflammatory reaction and good stabilization. In the follow-up 15.5months (5-24months),adhesions were released,conjunctiva defects were repaired and surfaces were rebuilt with satisfaction,in 23 of 31traumatic eyes.The other 8 eyes were partially improved because of severe burns.2of them were totally repaired after second amniotic membrane transplantation half a year later. One of ten recurrent pterygium eyes showed a recurrence.15eyes with prosthetic eyeball exposure and conjunctival sac contraction or keratohelcosis were all cured. Conclusion: The transplantation of preserved human amniotic membrane appears to be a very effective treatment for most of the severe ocular surface disease.
