Study of erythrocyte ATP level in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF)

Erythrocyte ATP level in pathients with chronic renal failure was found to be significantly higher than that in normal control.There was a negative correlation between the erythrocyte ATP contents and membrane ATP ase activity,and a positive correlation between the erythrocytes ATP contents and serum creatinine or urea nitrogen.High concentration of ATP may be resulted from:1.impeded ATP utilization,2.strenghtened reversion of pump;3.increased uptake and conversion of adenosine.The Increased level of ATP in patients with CRF may be a compensatoey regulation of energy metabolism and advantageous to the patients.
