Abstract
Objective: To investigative the effect of propranolol on body mineral density(BMD) and serum leptin in rats induced by ovariectomy(OVX). Methods: Fifty virgin female SD rats of six months old were divided into five groups: (1) Sham;(2) OVX+ 17β-estradial 20μg·kg-1 ·d-1 SC(O+E);(3) OVX+ Propranolol 8mg·kg-1 ·d-1 (O+P);(4)O+E+P (5) OVX. The administration of drugs were started one week after operation and continued for 12 weeks. Blood samples were collected before sacrifice to determine serum Leptin. The lumbar vertebrae were collected for BMD analysis. Results: Treatment of OVX rats with propranolol (O+P) increased BMD. These changes were similar to those 17β-estradial treatment group (O+E). Leptin increased in O+P group and O+P+E group, their body weight were similar to OVX group and O+E group. Conclusion: Propranolol prevent bone loss and increase serum leptin in OVX rats.
