Endoscopic grades and sleep disturbance in reflux esophagitis patients

Objective: To investigate the relationship between endoscopic grades and sleep disturbance in patients with reflux esophagitis. Methods: 172 reflux esophagitis patients（136 men and 36 women whose mean age was 56.7±15.8） hospitalized from January to December of 2006 were retrospectively analyzed by the Los Angeles classification.A sleep questionnaire was conducted in all the 172 patients. Results: 71 cases were identified as Grade A of reflux esophagitis,and 26（36.62%） of them had sleep disturbance.86,11 and 4 cases were found with Grade B,C and D of reflux esophagitis respectively.26（30.23%） of the Grade B cases,4（36.36%） of the Grade C cases and 2（50%） of the Grade D cases suffered sleep disturbance.Endoscopic classification was significantly related to symptoms affected by sleeping postures（P＜0.05）. Conclusion: Endoscopic grades were not related to the onset and manifestation of sleep disturbance in patients with reflux esophagitis,but symptoms in those severe patients were affected by sleeping postures more significantly than in those mild and moderate patients.
