Study on edentulous TMD patients with decreased vertical dimension

  • Objective:To observe the effect of condylar position before and after vertical dimension restoration of complete denture in edentulous TMD patients. Methods:Schuller's positional radiographs were made of all 48 patients in 3 groups.Joint spaces between the glenoid fossa were measured on the centric occlusion. Results:Before recover occlusal vertical dimension there was an obvious difference in anterior and posterior spaces(1.60mm,2.34mm;2.80mm,1.96mm).After recover occlusal vertical dimension on centric occlusion there was an obvious difference in left posterior and right anterior spaces(2.32mm,2.82mm;1.98mm,2.34mm),and significant difference in left anterior and right posterior spaces(2.02mm,1.60mm,2.34mm,1.96mm).Conclusion:The TMD can be caused by the change of vertical dimension in edentulous patients.
