Magnetic resonance imaging and pathological features of papillary glioneuronal tumor

  • Objective To analyze the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and pathological features of papillary glioneuronal tumor (PGNT) in 2 patients and review the literature. Methods A 12-year-old female and a 27-year-old male underwent pre-and post-contrast MRI with a 3.0 T magnetic resonance scanner (GE Service). The clinical, MRI and pathological features of PGNT were analyzed. The literature was reviewed. Results The clinical symptoms include absence seizure and epilepsy. MRI showed a cystic solid mass or a cystic lesion with mural nodules. The solid component and mural nodules were enhanced markedly after contrast agent administration. Both lesions were located in the temporal lobe, one of which was closely related with the lateral ventricle.Histopathological examination revealed their characteristic pseudopapillary structure with astrocytes and neurons. Conclusion PGNT is a rare tumor of the central nerve system. MRI can reveal a cystic mass with mural nodules in most cases. PGNT is usually located near the ventricle and can be divided into para-and extra-ventricular type.
